Dr Kealeboga Masalila is Bank of Botswana Deputy Governor

President Ian Khama has appointed Dr Kealeboga Masalila to the position of Deputy Governor of the Bank of Botswana with effect from December 1, 2016.

Dr Masalila joined the Bank in 1985 as an Assistant Research Officer in the then Research Department (now Research and Financial Stability Department).

He was promoted to the position of Research Officer in 1989 and, in 1992, transferred to the Banking Supervision Department where he served as Bank Examiner. In 1993, Dr Masalila was promoted to be Senior Bank Examiner and later transferred to the Research and Financial Stability Department as Senior Economist until his promotion to the position of Principal Economist in 1996.

Dr Masalila worked for the International Monetary Fund as a Special Appointee for a period of six months in 2003. He was promoted to the positions of Deputy Director and Director, Research and Financial Stability Department in 2004 and 2010, respectively.

As Director of Research and Financial Stability Department, Dr Masalila was responsible for, inter-alia, the formulation and implementation of monetary and exchange rate policies; promotion of financial stability and overall, professional and strategic leadership of the Department.

Dr Masalila obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Botswana in 1984, a Master of Philosophy in Monetary Economics from the University of Glasgow in 1989, and a PhD (Economics) from the University of Manchester in 2000. He has attended a number of short-term professional courses including an executive leadership programme of the University of Cape Town.
